As early voting kicks off on Wednesday, West Virginia’s political parties are trying to motivate voters in a state that has an abysmal voter turnout rate. Population decline, poverty, transportation barriers and political party apathy contribute to a lack of West Virginians at the polls.

During the general election, West Virginians will decide whether the state constitution should prohibit physicians and other health care providers from helping a patient die. Medically assisted suicide is already illegal in the state.

Here’s a list of places you can early vote in north central West Virginia. Most locations are open during normal business hours on Monday-Saturday. Barbour County Courthouse at 26 North main Street in Philippi (2nd floor); open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Even if you haven’t moved, it’s best to double check your polling place before you head out to vote. The easiest way to check is by looking on your voter registration card. Your polling place should be listed on your card just below your home address. This should include both your county and city polling place if you have one.
