From humble beginnings with just a badge, the officers of the Metropolitan Police Department have worn an array of hats, blouses, winter coats, and shirts as they progressed through the years.

Recruit officers are required to maintain a complete uniform in their assigned locker at the Metropolitan Police Academy. Additionally, any department-issued items or equipment (e.g. handcuffs, radio, Sam-brown belt, jacket/raincoat) must be kept at the Academy in the recruit officer’s assigned locker.

In October 2018 the MPD switched to a new uniform for Officers through Sergeants consisting of an outer load bearing vest with a patch on the back saying "METROPOLITAN POLICE" in white lettering. The color of the uniform also changed from the previous light powder blue to a dark navy blue, similar to the NYPD .
