Nefermaat was the son of King Sneferu, who reigned during the early part of the 4th Dynasty (about 2575–2551 BC). He was buried in a huge mastaba-tomb at Meidum. The tomb was first excavated in 1871, and again in 1892 by the English archaeologist W.M. Flinders Petrie.
