In both 1715 and 1745, Scottish pretenders to the English throne mounted full-scale rebellions. The rebellion of 1745 led by Charles Edward Stuart (known as “Bonnie Prince Charlie”) was the last, and was soundly put down by England at the Battle of Culloden. The reputation of the Scots as fearsome warriors remains to this day.
Tongue: A Fascinating Destination Filled with History
Some believe that had these men been with him at the Battle of Culloden, the outcome may have been very different. The gold was later recovered by the government. It was extended as a 17th century courtyard castle, from the 16th century tower house. In 1683, John Graham of Claverhouse, known as Bonnie Dundee, acquired both the castle and the office of Hereditary Constable. He led the Jacobites to victory at Killiecrankie in 1689, but died in battle.
