2007年12月13日 · Species of the family Elpidiidae are the only representatives of elasipodid holothurians in the Arctic. To date, four species have been recognized in the Arctic basin: Elpidia glacialis Théel, 1876, Elpidia heckeri Baranova, 1989, Irpa abyssicola Danielssen & Koren, 1878 and Kolga hyalina Danielssen & Koren, 1879.

A lectotype has been designated for Kolga hyalina. Diagnoses of all examined species have been revised. Elpidiids from the deeper parts of the Arctic Ocean, determined previously as Elpidia glacialis, are identified as Elpidia heckeri or Elpidia belyaevi sp. nov. All Arctic specimens of Kolga are referred to Kolga hyalina.

Since the 1800s, researchers observed sea cucumbers similar to this one in the Arctic at all depths, from shallow to deep, and assumed they were all the same species, Elpidia glacialis. But after the Census, researchers think that E. glacialis lives mostly in shallow water, while the new species E. belyaevi lives in the mid- and deep ocean.

Elpidia is a genus of deep-sea sea cucumbers. Members are characterised by their rod-shaped spicules which each have two pairs of obliquely placed horizontal arms and two vertical apophyses.
