John Cromwell Mather (born August 7, 1946) is an American astrophysicist, cosmologist and Nobel Prize in Physics laureate for his work on the Cosmic Background Explorer Satellite (COBE) with George Smoot.

John C. Mather is an American physicist, who was corecipient, with George F. Smoot, of the 2006 Nobel Prize for Physics for discoveries supporting the big-bang model. Mather studied physics at Swarthmore University (B.S., 1968) and the University of California at Berkeley (Ph.D., 1974).
