History of Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority
Construction on the East Line began in 1975 and the first rail service began on June 30, 1979, between the Georgia State and Avondale stations. In June 1993, the Kensington and Indian Creek stations opened, which also marked the first time MARTA rail service went outside I-285.

MARTA was originally proposed to serve Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett counties. In 1965 the Georgia General Assembly voted to create MARTA as part of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority Act.

Originally, MARTA operated trains every eight minutes during the day on weekdays on each route. When two routes operated on the same tracks, the effective headway was cut in half, and the North-South Line operated on a combined four-minute headway between Lindbergh Center and Airport stations on the trunk.
