I added some trim on the bottom so the drawers would slide perfectly, plus some string MDF on top with brackets for strength. This lovely shelf was an old school IKEA piece and needed a makeover. It had been through a lot, but refinishing was a better option than buying a new one. The backer board was originally in two pieces taped. The tape had failed so there wasn’t a lot of structural integrity left in it. I removed the tape and adhesive and glued down a new piece in the center, attaching with glue and screws. Strong as ever now!
